Modern civil liberties and constitutional law can be traced to the Magna Carta signed in 1215. The document known as the "Great Charter of Freedoms" required King John of England to proclaim certain rights to free men, respect certain legal procedures, and accept that his will could be bound by the law. The charter supported what would evolve into the writ of habeas corpus.
