AFL-CIO

The American Federation of Labor was one of the first organized labor unions in the U.S. The AFL was established in Columbus, Ohio in 1886 by Samuel Gompers. Growth and challenges led the Congress of Industrial Organizations to form and spin off from the AFL in the 1930s. The CIO later reunited with the resulting AFL-CIO in 1955. Union membership in the U.S. has steadily declined since the mid 1950s.
