Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Democratic congressman John Conyers first introduced legislation for a commemorative Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968. Legislation was resubmitted each session up through 1983, when Congress passed the bill making the third Monday in January an official federal holiday in memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
