Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

In a landmark decision, the 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka declared racially segregated schools unconstitutional and overruled the "separate but equal" doctrine announced in the Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson. In declaring that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal, the Court carved a foundation for the civil rights movement.
