Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment was first introduced into Congress in 1923 by Alice Paul. The intention was to guarantee equal rights under any federal, state, or local law. The bill languished until 1972 when Congress passed the legislation with a seven-year deadline for ratification. The amendment fell three states short of ratification and expired on June 30, 1982.
