Labor Day

Labor union leader Peter J. McGuire initiated the first Labor Day celebration on this day in 1882 in New York City. The first governmental recognition of Labor Day came through municipal ordinances passed in 1885. By 1894, twenty-eight states had recognized Labor Day as a holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day an official national holiday in 1894.
